Our FAQ

Q. What is Wild Shore Press?

Wild Shore Press is a small print house specializing in Ebooks and hardcopy editions of literature of all kinds. We publish a mix of established and unpublished authors in all areas of fiction and some nonfiction areas.

Most of our sales are electronic copies. We contract the services of a publish-on-demand company to supply hardcopy paperback and hardcover versions of our works.

Q. Is Wild Shore a Vanity Press?

No. Wild Shore is a royalty paying house. We only print the pieces we review and accept. There are no author’s fees, reading fees, contest fees, isbn fees or any other kind of fees for the writer.

Q. What genres are published?

We publish poetry, poetry anthology, short story, short story anthology, novellettes, novellas, and novels in the categories of :

Fine literature and poetry
Fantasy
Science Fiction
Horror
Historical Fiction

We are open to other fields of fiction, but insist on well plotted, well written pieces.

We will also publish nonfiction works of:

Environmental and Ecological how-to’s, especially relating to self sufficiency and homesteading.
Well researched history and biography
Interesting Travel and Exploration

We do NOT publish:

Fan Fiction
Romance Novels (as opposed to literature with romantic themes...for us the difference is one of quality, not subject matter)
Porn (as opposed to erotic) literature, paedophilia, slasher stuff, etc.
Anything formulaic.

Q. What do you pay for work?

Wild Shore Press pays a flat 40% royalty on the net amount (after any outside production/printing costs) received from each work. Payment is quarterly, and we pay via PayPal account.

Q. How long can the work be? How long does it need to be?

We consider works as follows:

Poetry: Any length. Unless in anthology, poems are published as ebook only.
Short Story: Up to 10,000 words (published as above)
Novelette: 10,000-30,000 words (published as above)
Novella: 30,000-50,000 words, published ebook and hardcopy
Novels: over 50,000 words, published ebook and hardcopy
At present, we are not interested in works over 90,000 words

We also publish serial pieces in segments of about 2500 words

Q. Will I have to promote my own work? Do you promote it?

Wild Shore Press does everything we can to promote your work (obviously since we only make money on the works we sell) within the limits of our budget. We arrange web advertising, send review copies, and arrange signings, readings, and author conferences as we can. We expect our authors to help promote their works as well through appearances and networking with readers. Authors without a well known name will only get a name and reputation by forging a connection with their readers. Really, you’ll be surprised at the difference in your royalty check that a single book signing or poetry reading can make.

Q. How often do I get paid?

Quarterly, provided your sales exceed $5.

Q. Will you Copyright my work?

Under US copyright law, your work was copywritten the moment you wrote it. You may or may not choose to register that work with the Government. We will not do so for you.

Q. Will my book get an ISBN number?

We assign ISBN numbers (yes, the new 13 digit ones) to all major works (novels, novellas, and other works of that length) at our discretion. Works of shorter length, such as novellettes and short stories that are only offered as ebooks, and works that we feel may have only a limited circulation outside of the internet will not be assigned an ISBN number. These things cost us (and you) money.

Q. How long is the contract? What am I giving away?

You’re giving away nothing. You own all rights to your work. You are effectively leasing us those rights for a period of time. We have a 3 year contract for publishing full length works and anthologies. Individual poems and short stories may be reprinted in other publications or anthologies, provided the Wild Shore Press anthology in which they appear is credited. We do not purchase ancillary rights such as film or television. You may do with those as you will.

Q. What form should submissions take?

Please QUERY FIRST, with a brief description of the work and a brief bio on yourself. If we are open to it, we will ask you to submit the full piece.

We accept only electronic submissions via email; no disks, no manuscripts, no flash drives, just email. Please, PLEASE, read your work before you send it to us. Go over the spelling and grammar, make sure all the paragraphs you think should be there ARE, in fact, in the version you send us. To be blunt, we are not in the business of teaching you your business. Send us a professional copy of your professionally written work.

Initial submissions may be in any format, but should be submitted as an attached .rtf file to your submission letter. The letter should contain: Your pen name (if applicable), real name, reliable email address, phone, a brief blub (like a jacket cover blurb) describing the work, and a brief bio on you, the author.

By submitting the work, you are representing to us that you own the rights to your submission and have the right to submit it, to sign contracts regarding it, and to have it published in the name you choose.

On receipt, we will send you an email acknowledging the piece and letting you know how long it may be before we get back to you on it (it depends on how many works are in the system). If that’s too long, you can drop us a note and tell us to forget about it and we will.

Once we read it, we may a) reject it b) say we’d be happy to see it again if you made certain changes we think it needs, c) accept it provided you make some edits we think it needs, or d) accept the work as is. We are unlikely to critique the work for you if we choose not to print it.

If you agree to our contract terms, we will ask you to resubmit the work to us as a .pdf file set to our margin and typesetting requirements. As soon as we have a satisfactory copy and can complete our formatting, the work will go into publication and you will receive a royalty check and statement at the end of the next quarter.

Please ask to see our sample contract for further details.
